McKinney ISD Opens the 2026–27 School Year on August 13

MISD's first day of school is August 13, with the year running through May 27. Here's what families need to know before the bell rings.

The Bell Rings August 13

After a summer that went fast for some McKinney families and not fast enough for others, McKinney ISD opens the 2026–27 school year on Thursday, August 13. Every campus in the district participates on the same date, so there is no staggered start by grade level or zone to track. The school year runs through May 27, 2027, a calendar approved by the MISD Board of Trustees and already posted on the district’s official calendar page.

Thirteen days is not a lot of runway from today, August 3, so if supply lists, physicals, or registration paperwork are still sitting on the kitchen counter, this week is the window to handle them.

New Teachers Got a Community Welcome This Morning

The timing is worth noting: the McKinney Chamber of Commerce hosted its MISD New Hire Welcome Breakfast on the morning of August 3, the same day this article publishes. The event is a chamber tradition that formally introduces newly hired MISD teachers and administrators to the broader McKinney business community — a signal that the district’s staffing picture for opening day is largely set and that fresh faces are already being folded into the fabric of the city.

For students, that means classrooms are staffed. For parents doing last-minute school-choice or transfer paperwork, it is a practical reminder that rosters are solidifying and the district is in launch mode.

What the Calendar Means Week by Week

August 3–12: Final Pre-School Window

These ten days are the practical runway. Families should confirm campus assignments, transportation arrangements, and any required health documentation directly through their campus or the MISD website. The district’s calendar page is the authoritative source for teacher workdays, early-release schedules, and holiday breaks — worth bookmarking now rather than scrambling for it in September.

August 13: First Day

All MISD campuses open simultaneously. Expect the usual first-day traffic patterns around elementary drop-off loops and middle and high school parking areas. Building in an extra ten minutes of drive time on August 13 — and realistically the rest of that first week — is not overcautious.

May 27, 2027: Last Day

With the end date set, families can begin locking in summer 2027 travel and camp bookings now rather than waiting for the calendar to be finalized mid-year. That is one concrete advantage of a board-approved calendar published this far in advance.

Three Ribbon Cuttings and a Pickleball Tournament — Also on August 13

The first day of school is not the only thing happening around McKinney on August 13. The McKinney Chamber of Commerce is hosting a ribbon cutting for Vero McKinney, a new local business, at 11:30 a.m. that same morning. The McKinney Young Professionals are also holding their first-ever pickleball event that evening, featuring a tournament bracket structured so every participant plays at least two games.

None of that affects school logistics, but it does underscore that August 13 is shaping up to be an active day across the city — worth keeping in mind if you are coordinating pick-up times and evening plans simultaneously.

A Quieter Resource While the Hall Library Is Under Renovation

Families setting up for the school year who need library resources should note that the Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library remains closed for renovations. Holds, returns, and regular children’s and adult programming have shifted to the John and Judy Gay Library at 6861 W. Eldorado Pkwy. That campus is the practical go-to for book checkouts, homework help resources, and after-school programming until the Hall renovation wraps.

The Practical Checklist

To summarize what the next ten days look like for McKinney families:

  • Aug. 3–12 — Confirm campus assignment, transportation, and required documents through McKinney ISD
  • Aug. 13 — First day of school, all MISD campuses
  • Aug. 13, 11:30 a.m. — Vero McKinney ribbon cutting (McKinney Chamber)
  • May 27, 2027 — Last day of the 2026–27 school year
  • Ongoing — Library services at John and Judy Gay Library, 6861 W. Eldorado Pkwy.

The district’s calendar page carries the full breakdown of early-release days, holidays, and grading periods. Getting familiar with it now, before the year is underway, saves a week’s worth of confusion once the routine sets in.
